About Me

Joe: Who am I and what am I doing on the internet? Well, I'm an Average Joe, just like you (hopefully). I like reviewing consumer products based on their merits with respect to the general public. Products should make a consumer's life better, and I always want to make sure consumers get a good deal. You won't hear any geek speak or techo-babble from me - just straight forward reviews on the product with a focus on the end user. After all, manufacturers and their products should cater to us, not the other way around!

Hate to say "I told you so" but...

As reported in my Dollarama review, I just didn't have confidence in dollar / discount stores for products where safety can be easily tampered with (food, hygene, electrical). Nothing personal against these businesses, it just seems fairly obvious that they do not have the infrastucture or inventory control needed to effectively track and monitor the quality and source of the incoming stock. I think the following scandal with counterfeit Colgate toothpaste tubes in the US is proof enough:

"Colgate-labelled toothpaste sold in discount stores in the US has been found to contain a toxic chemical. The firm that makes the toothpaste was quick to distance itself from these products, calling them counterfeits."

I never give plugs to private webpages, but this is a neat site that can help you avoid finding yourself on the short end of an internet scam. Remember: Firewalls can be cracked, antivirus programs can be fooled - knowledge and experience are your last lines of defence! Let’s outsmart the scammers!!

Were you charged the wrong price at the counter? Know your rights!

Ever see a nice t-shirt tagged for sale at $9.99, only to have it scan for $12.99 at the counter? If you are in Quebec, you just got that shirt for free. See the following link about the consumer protection law imposed by the provincial government of Quebec and the Price Accuracy Policy:

http://www.opc.gouv.qc.ca/WebForms/Chronique/IndicationPrix.aspx

In summary, if the item scans at a higher price than indicated, you automatically take the lower of the two values (i.e. the advertised value). Then apply one of the following:

The item is FREE if the advertised value is less than $10
If the advertised value is greater than $10, you are given an immediate discount of $10 on that value

There are some exceptions – for example, the price must be marked directly on the item (not a sign or label on the shelf where the item is located), and it can get tricky with sale or discounted items. Browse the OPC website for a list of FAQ’s or contact them at their 1-888 number for more details. If you are a Quebec resident, I would suggest you print out the above OPC link and keep a copy in your wallet … it could come in handy!
